I’ll just stick with Tubi and their massive collection of 70’s, 80’s, 90’s and 2000’s stuff (the biggest B movie catalog one can stream). Because the amount of shit coming down the pike is… INSANE!!! (And good luck seeing any of it when it is all over the streaming map).
The sad thing… there’s not much “new” coming in all of this “new stuff”. So much of it is sequels, prequels, and reboots. As the video says… it’s all just product and sadly, a lot of people are going to flock to this junk just because it is there. It’s an overload of crap.
The state of media has gotten much worse than when we all bitched, moaned, and complained about cable. We thought streaming would bring together the shows in one or two places where we would subscribe and get so everything. Then the studios decided to get greedy and instead of licensing shows out, they chose to go the subscriber route. The problem is, the subscriber route is NOT sustainable and many of the services are finding that out. That’s why Max, AMC, and Paramount have gone back to licensing content out (the old tried and true process that is still more lucrative than subscriptions).
Then you have the sick and greedy like Disney+ and Apple that keep their stuff locked up behind their subscriber walls. AppleTV being the absolute worst because they don’t even put out physical copies for sale. I’s love to watch Silo and even check out the show they did that was loosely based on Foundation but I’m not subscribing to AppleTV. So if they refuse to put out physical media… Screw it. There are other things to watch. Besides… I’ve read the books and they are probably much better than the shows.
The best outcome would be a major consolidation where all of the production companies went back to licensing and stuck to what they were once good at…. making content. And that’s not Woke content, but actual content that entertains. However, for that happen, people have to stop giving money to the half-assed product that is currently being shoveled down their throat. Why is anyone subscribed to Disney+??? Why is anyone going to see, I Know What You Did Last Summer before the Summer Before Last and Ten Summers Back???
Content Vacuum: “Whooohooo Are you going to go see I Know What you Did Last Summer Again, Friday night?”
Me: Another sequel? And “again”? I remember seeing the original in the theater back in 1997.”
Content Vacuum: “Oh no, this is Series 2, you’re talking about the old series 1. It’s been rebooted and they started over from the beginning again.”
Me: …
How many times can this shit be repackaged before the audience turns away? And why wouldn’t the audience go back to watch the original. That’s what I did when they would update movies from black and white and the older original stuff… Body Snatchers, The Blob, Flash Gordan, Godzilla, Planet of the Apes… I went back and watch them. Unfortunately the people of modern times have no love for history so they are doomed to repeat it over and over and over again. That’s why I Know What You Are Watching This Winter Again!!!
Don't bother watching the Apple TV Foundation series. I had a free subscription at the time and it wasn't worth the cost. In fact you'd have to pay me large quantiies of money to get to watch it. "Loosely based" is a very gernous term. I usually say modern scifi TV and moves are like people writing fan-fiction only they've never seen or read the source material. The Foundation series was worse than that.
As for watching older stuff, I agree. All that you mentioned, I prefer the original over the remake. However Stormageddon instantly hates anything he discovers to be older than 3 years old. I'm going to keep working on him.
Stuido streaming servies vs licensed content streaming services, I want both. If we only have Netflix and Tubi and maybe one or two other streaming services, we'll see the mass censorship was saw with FB and the WuFlu. Plus they'll never pay for any good independent content. So we do need the content creators to also stream their stuff. However I do agree I'm not going to pay for 100 different servies just to watch one show on each of them. Also I'm not quite at the point of going back to physical media, but I certainly understand why someone would.
My theory is that 30+ years ago the methods of measuring media audiences, advertising efficiency etc., etc. were still comparatively rudimentary; while there were all sorts of measurements, the numbers were being taken with a grain of salt, and it was certainly easier to sell advertising time if you had a cool channel with cool content.
Nowadays everyone is fairly certain that crap does, in fact, sell.
